Tribute for Gerry Connolly:
The nation mourns the loss of Democratic Representative Gerry Connolly of Virginia, who passed away peacefully at the age of 75 following a battle with esophageal cancer. Surrounded by loved ones in his home, Congressman Connolly’s passing marks the end of a long and devoted career in public service—one characterized by dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the American people.
First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008, Rep. Connolly represented Virginia’s 11th Congressional District, where he became a passionate advocate for federal workers, whose livelihoods are closely tied to the Northern Virginia region. Known for his deep knowledge of government operations and commitment to oversight, he was a respected and prominent voice on Capitol Hill.
Until stepping down just last month, Connolly served as the top Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, a post he held with distinction. Even amid his personal health challenges, Connolly remained deeply committed to the responsibilities of his office, exemplified by his successful election to the committee’s leadership in December 2024—defeating a challenge from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
A lifelong public servant, Connolly’s legacy is defined not just by policy but by people. He was admired across the aisle for his thoughtful approach, deep respect for democratic institutions, and advocacy for transparency and accountability. In every speech, vote, and hearing, Connolly fought for the working families of Virginia and for the strength of America’s civil service.
In a statement shared by his family:
“It is with immense sadness that we share that our devoted and loving father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, passed away peacefully at his home this morning surrounded by family.”
As we honor his memory, we also extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, constituents, and all who were touched by his life and leadership. Rest in peace, Congressman Connolly. Your service will not be forgotten.
