Tribute for Sean Chilson:

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Sean Michael Chilson, 34, of Thurmont, Maryland. Sean’s body was discovered on Tuesday evening, May 20, 2025, near Biggs Ford Bridge on the Monocacy River after an extensive seven-day search following his disappearance on May 14th during a kayaking trip in severe weather.

Sean was a proud former U.S. Marine, having served with honor in Okinawa. After his military service, he continued to lead a life marked by adventure, community, and compassion. An experienced outdoorsman, Sean loved hiking, kayaking, and spending time in nature—often sharing those passions with friends and family. He was deeply connected to the land and water around his home in Western Maryland.

Professionally, Sean was known for his dedication and leadership as a sales manager at Century Dodge/Chrysler/Ram/Jeep in Frederick County. He was respected by colleagues and customers alike for his integrity, work ethic, and warm personality.

Sean’s disappearance sparked a wave of community action—from organized search parties to heartfelt prayers and shared memories. The coordinated recovery effort, aided by the Maryland Natural Resources Police and the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services, was a testament to the lives Sean touched and the community that rallied for him. He is remembered most for his contagious smile, his love for the outdoors, and the kindness he showed to everyone around him. As his brother Seth shared, “Sean loved to be around people. He lit up every room and every trail he walked.”

A memorial service to honor Sean’s life will be held this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the American Legion in Thurmont, Maryland. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of a remarkable man who lived fully, served honorably, and loved deeply. Sean leaves behind a grieving but grateful family, countless friends, and a community forever changed by his presence. His spirit, sense of adventure, and heart for others will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Sean. You are deeply loved and will be sorely missed.
