Tribute for Kevin Mills:
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kevin Mills, founder of Walk It Off Spinal Cord Recovery Centre, who died unexpectedly in Franklin, Tennessee, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, advocacy, and compassion. Kevin’s life changed forever in 2009 when a diving accident left him with a spinal cord injury.
Refusing to be defined by his injury, Kevin redirected his strength and determination into helping others, founding Walk It Off in Newmarket, Ontario. Through his vision, countless individuals living with spinal cord injuries were given hope, support, and access to Activity-Based Therapy (ABT) — a specialized form of rehabilitation designed to improve function and mobility beyond traditional treatment.
Kevin quickly became a respected leader in Canada’s small but mighty ABT community. His impact extended across the country through his Pedaling Possibilities campaign, during which he handcycled across Canada to raise awareness and funds for spinal cord recovery programs. His tireless dedication inspired clients, families, clinicians, and advocates alike. He showed us what true perseverance looked like — with humour, heart, and an unshakable belief in the power of community.
Beyond his public advocacy, Kevin was a deeply loved son, partner, and friend. To those close to him, he was a gentle, thoughtful soul with a sharp wit and a warm, generous spirit. He celebrated every small victory, encouraged everyone around him, and never missed an opportunity to lift others up.
Kevin’s Celebration of Life will be held on June 7 at the Newmarket Community Centre and Lions Hall. All who were touched by his life and work are welcome to attend and share in the remembrance of a man who gave so much of himself to others.
Though Kevin is no longer with us, his mission lives on. His legacy is one of strength, service, and hope — and he will be missed beyond measure. Rest in power, Kevin. You helped countless others walk again — and we will carry your spirit forward every step of the way.
