Tribute to Les Sinclair:

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Les Sinclair, the gentle giant of Shetland’s comedy scene, who died peacefully on the morning of May 21, 2025. Les was 63. A beloved figure in the Sumburgh and wider Shetland Islands community, Les was more than just a comedian—he was a friend, mentor, performer, and beloved family man. Known for his quick wit, generous heart, and, yes, for always bringing fudge, Les left an indelible mark on the comedy world and everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Les had been a cherished regular at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival since 2012, and a founding member of Shetland’s own improv troupe, The Imposters. His contribution to their debut performance in January 2016 at the Lerwick Legion launched nearly a decade of laughter, creativity, and community. Through it all, Les wasn’t just a performer—he was family.

Les gave his final performance at the Edinburgh International Improv Festival on March 22, 2025. Despite declining health, he poured himself into the show with characteristic humor and heart. Though a chair had been set aside for him offstage, he never used it—he chose instead to give the audience one last unforgettable performance full of absurdity, joy, and love.

Beyond the stage, Les was an unwavering source of kindness and support. Many comedians—seasoned and new—owe part of their journey to Les’s encouragement, advice, and belief in their talents. He made everyone feel like they belonged, because in Les’s world, they did.

He is survived by his loving wife Joy, his children, grandchildren, and countless friends who became like family. To know Les was to laugh, to feel seen, and to be reminded that life is better when shared. The Shetland comedy scene, and the hearts of many, will never be quite the same. Rest well, Les. Show the angels your A4 bus pass. You were one of a kind, and we love you.
