Tribute for Gordon Ross:
Key West has lost a true legend with the passing of Gordon Ross, a beloved member of the community whose vibrant spirit, musical talent, and deep commitment to local causes left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. Gordon passed away recently, and his absence is already profoundly felt across the island he loved so much.
Gordon was larger than life — not just in stature, but in presence. He was the kind of person who could light up a room with his easygoing demeanor and disarming charm. A gifted musician, Gordon’s melodic voice and passion for performance made him a fixture in Key West’s music scene, where his talent brought joy to countless locals and visitors alike.
Beyond the stage, Gordon’s impact ran deep in the nonprofit world. His work with MARC Key West, where he served as Development Director, helped support individuals with developmental disabilities, reflecting his deep compassion and dedication to making the world a better place. Those who worked with him remember not only his effectiveness and professionalism, but also his warmth, humor, and mentorship.
I had the privilege of knowing Gordon for many years — “back when we both had hair,” as we used to joke. That friendship deepened when my wife, Rebecca Balcer, succeeded him at MARC Key West. In moments when I praised her success, she would often remind me that much of it was built on the foundation Gordon had laid. That’s who he was — a man who lifted others, quietly and generously.
Gordon’s loss leaves a hole in the fabric of the community. He was a friend, a mentor, a musician, and a humanitarian. As we mourn, we also celebrate the joy he brought into our lives and the legacy he leaves behind. Rest easy, Gordon. Go on now and charm the angels with that sweet, soulful voice. You will be missed, remembered, and cherished always.
