With profound sadness, we share the heartbreaking news of the sudden and tragic passing of Matt Eckert of Walkerton, Ontario, who died in a car accident over the weekend of May 18, 2025. He was a beloved son, friend, coach, and mentor whose life was taken far too soon. Known affectionately as “Ecky” by those who knew and loved him, Matt was more than just a coach—he was a source of strength, positivity, and unwavering support to his players and community.
As Assistant Coach of the Northstars, Matt brought a fierce dedication and infectious passion to the team. His voice on the bench, encouraging words in the locker room, and commitment to developing young athletes made an enduring impact. The Northstars and Northmen lacrosse families now mourn the loss of not only a coach but a brother, a role model, and a friend.
Matt’s passion for sport was rivaled only by the love and loyalty he showed to those around him. Whether it was coaching, sharing laughs with teammates and friends, or lending a helping hand to someone in need, Matt’s heart was always in the right place. He had a gift for connecting with others—bringing light, humor, and genuine care to every interaction. His loss is deeply felt across Walkerton and beyond. The outpouring of love and condolences from athletes, colleagues, family, and friends speaks volumes about the person Matt was: kind, humble, hardworking, and deeply cherished.
