Tribute for Owen George:

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of Owen George, age 21, of Cochrane, Alberta, who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on the morning of Saturday, May 31, 2025. His sudden departure has left his family, friends, teammates, and the broader lacrosse community in shock and mourning.

Owen was a remarkable young man whose energy, kindness, and spirit touched all who knew him. He was well-known in his community, not only for his athletic talent but also for his leadership, humility, and infectious sense of humor. Born and raised in Cochrane, Owen began playing lacrosse at a young age with the Rockyview Rage, quickly gaining a reputation as a committed teammate and a standout player. His skill and dedication led to his selection by the Silvertips in the 2020 Junior Draft. For the entirety of his junior career, Owen proudly wore the Silvertips jersey, embodying the values of teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.

Owen’s impact on the team went far beyond his performance on the floor. He was known for being the first to greet new players, often taking it upon himself to introduce them around and ensure they felt welcomed. Coaches and teammates alike speak of his leadership, warmth, and unwavering support—he was the glue that helped bind the team together.

Though a promising career opportunity prevented him from playing his final season, Owen remained a dedicated part of the Silvertips family. He attended practices whenever possible—even once showing up in cowboy boots, grinning ear to ear—and continued to cheer on his teammates from the sidelines. His loyalty and love for the game never waned. At the Silvertips’ game following his passing, a moment of silence was held in his honor. His jersey, now a cherished symbol of his spirit, will remain in the dressing room and on the bench for the rest of the season, reminding all who knew him of the legacy he leaves behind.

Owen was more than just an athlete. He was a beloved son, a caring friend, a role model to younger players, and a bright light in the lives of so many. He approached life with the same passion and determination he brought to the lacrosse field—giving his all, lifting others up, and never missing a chance to make someone smile. His tragic passing is a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life is and how important it is to cherish every moment. Those who knew Owen will remember him not just for his accomplishments, but for his kindness, loyalty, and the deep, genuine care he showed to those around him.

He is survived by his loving family, who ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time as they navigate a grief no parent or sibling should have to endure. They are comforted by the outpouring of love and support from the lacrosse community, friends, and neighbors—support that truly reflects the kind of person Owen was.

Plans for a memorial service and celebration of life will be announced in the coming days. The George family has expressed their gratitude for the condolences and tributes that have poured in. In lieu of flowers, they ask that donations be made in Owen’s name to local youth lacrosse programs—ensuring that his love for the sport lives on in the next generation. To the Silvertips, the Rage, and everyone in the lacrosse community: thank you for lifting Owen’s family up during this time. Your support means more than words can express. Owen George—player, leader, friend, son—your light was brilliant and far too brief. You will be missed more than words can say, but you will never, ever be forgotten. Rest in peace, Owen. Your jersey may hang still, but your spirit will always be on the floor.
